Report from 2011

Concord High students journeyed out in bright sunshine to their recent debate (21.6.11)  against Cherrybrook High School in the Premier's Debating Competition for years 7 and 8. The team consisted of Emerald, Gillian, Colin and Lauren. The topic of the debate was ‘That students should do compulsory community service.' As the negative team we were charged with opposing this notion and the affirmative's team line ‘help yourself- by helping the community.'

Emerald initiated our case with a strong rebuttal in a clear and effective manner and put the team on the front foot. She further supported her case with the team line- ‘why volunteer if you don't enjoy it.- it will limit our volunteering in the future- when it is needed.' and identified the limitations of time in restricting students ability to do community service.

When the time came, Gillian strode purposely to the middle of the stage and immediately tore into the Cherrybrook's case.  She then reaffirmed our case by emphasising the practical difficulties in such a scheme.

Still Cherrybrook came at us again and their strong 3rd speaker determined that this would be a very close and skilful debate.  Their third speaker concluded powerfully. Enter- Colin. Colin spoke in his own powerful style and hammered away at the opposition points in a continued stream of rebuttal while also adding some clarity to the situation.  The rest they say- is history. It was left for the adjudicator to have the final say…….. and…… (drum roll). A very close win to Concord!    Next debate at home against our own Year 7s.
