Connecting to ConcordAt Concord High School we are excited to announce the school Dux for last year 2008 was an International Student from China.  Xiao Ma is a gifted student who worked hard to achieve outstanding results in his Higher School Certificate.  Not only was Xiao awarded Dux but he also received an Award from the International Student Centre – Sydney for his high Academic success.  A second student Nan Chen also received an Award from the ISC for service to his school community.  Both students worked hard to achieve their goals.  The teachers and students at Concord High School are proud of their achievements.

There are 52 International students currently enrolled at Concord High School.  This year many of our students have come from Korea, China with only one student from Japan and another from India and one from Vietnam.  The cross-cultural experience of International students interacting with our local students is a powerful educational experience.  It allows for all students to enhance their knowledge of each others culture and language.  In an ever changing global world it is essential for young people to develop tolerance and understanding of other cultures.

The ongoing support of the LBOTE/International Students Project Team is highly regarded in the school.  Recent rule changes have required schools to have a greater role in the welfare needs of young International students.  This year the team has joined forces with other Project teams to encourage International Students to continue??? to participate within the whole school community and to foster good relations.  One such project involves Year 10 International girls being targeted to partake in the Year 10 leadership course organised by Ms Carol Davis, Year 10 Girls Advisor.  Students in the past who undertook the leadership course have gone on to be Prefects/leaders at Concord High School.  It would be very exciting to see a selection of International female students become School Prefects, just as Nan Chen did in his last senior year.

Once again at Concord High School we are fortunate to employ two Youth Officers who often liaise between students and teachers.  Seung Hwa Sue Han is a Korean speaker who has acquired her TESOL Dipolma and is able to offer her professional knowledge and support in the classroom with students. Jessie Huang speaks Chinese (Mandarin) and is currently studying Radiography at Sydney University. It is important to note that Jessie is an ex-student of Concord who did extremely well in her HSC in 2007.  The two liaison officers provide an essential link between students and teachers and they are often in the classroom offering English language support
